Getting an NYCID

Any New York resident over age 14 can get a New York City ID card, even undocumented immigrants.

1. Go to the ID NYC website.

2. Look through the lists of documents needed to prove identity and residency. There are many forms of acceptable documentation, including education/work IDs, copies of documents, foreign passports, medical records etc. Ask the participant which documents they have.

• The participant does not need to have the documents with them physically in order to start the process! But, you do need to know which documents are in their possession.

3. Begin the participant's online application.

• The participant will need an email address (you can set up a Gmail account with them if they do not have an email address).

• Make sure you write down which documents you are checking off, so the participant knows what to bring to the appointment.

4. Submit the online application and make an appointment to go into a center.

• Look up which center is closest to where the participant lives.

• Tell the participant that if they need a metro card, they can come to WHCP before their appointment to get one.

5. Before the intake interview is over, ask the participant to check his/her email for the appointment confirmation, or offer to do this for them.

• If possible, print out the confirmation, or email it in PDF form to Billy or Israel (talk to the staff member about the case before or after you involve them so they are in the loop).

• Make sure the participant knows the day, date, and time of the appointment, and go over the plan with them to come to WHCP to get a metro card and then go to the appointment with all their documents.
