Speaking with a Public Defender

Once you know which PD office to contact, here's a checklist of things to do or have on hand for the call:

  1. Introduce yourself

    1. Either as a NYU Law Student, that you work with the Washington Heights Corner Project to connect low-income individuals to legal services

    2. Or as a client seeking services

  2. Provide client's name, brief synopsis of what happened

    1. Have on hand date, time, location of incident, any other details highly relevant to the issue

  3. Answer any follow-up questions

  4. Explain that you can write an advocacy letter for client supported by Washington Heights Corner Project

  5. Conclude
